The school was founded by Susanna Harvey in 1870. She continued to support it until her death in 1881. Earlier, in 1865, Lord Churston had founded a school at Churston Ferrers and, as a result of an agreement between the two patrons, boys who passed 'Standard One' (children of eight years of age) went from Galmpton to Churston. This marked the beginning of the admissions system that we have today.
